An Intern’s Experience at IWS

The Angel Harvey Family Center of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago is not only a great health organization, but it is also a learning environment!

I have had the opportunity to intern at the organization in different departments, and it has helped me advance in both my academic and professional careers. I am a Marketing, Speech Pathology, and Child Development Intern. I work closely with the Outreach and Communications Manager to create marketing materials to promote the services and partnerships that benefit the patients and community. I have learned about the importance of staying informed with policies surrounding health care and sharing the information with people.

As a rising junior in college studying Communication Sciences and Psychology, I have become more involved in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders. I have learned that this is a growing field that involves the study of how humans communicate using voice, speech, language, hearing, and swallowing. At Angel Harvey, I have had the opportunity to work alongside a Speech-Language Pathologist and Child Development Therapist in their Child-centered Health and Advanced Therapies (CHAT) program. During the internship, I have observed the variety of services offered by the program, such as occupational therapy, social skills groups for children with special needs and parent drop-in support groups. I practice interaction and discussions with children, parents, and families. The practice has allowed me to gain perspective about the different dynamics that exist in families and how children have individual needs that are attended to in different ways.

Having the opportunity to intern at Angel Harvey has helped me expand my network and learn about the various components that make up a health non-profit organization. I have met with people from different departments, such as Care Coordinators, Pediatricians, and Development Managers. I have gained knowledge about the work and effort that is put into making sure that patients are receiving a variety of health care services under one location. I am so happy that I have spent my summer learning at Angel Harvey but sad at the same time that my internship here is almost over. I have met incredible professionals whose goals are to serve the community, and I am glad that I have been able to see them in action!
